What is the fivefold ministry in Ephesians 4?
The fivefold ministry is the term for five leadership gifts named in Ephesians 4:11, where the risen Christ gives “the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers.” Their purpose is stated plainly in the next two verses: to equip God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ is built up until it reaches unity in the faith and maturity in the knowledge of the Son of God.
In other words, these gifts are not there to do the work for the church. They are there to prepare the church to do the work.
The five gifts
- Apostles are the sent ones. They plant, build, and set spiritual foundations, and they carry the work into new places.
- Prophets listen and speak. They keep the church aligned with what God is saying and doing.
- Evangelists carry the good news outward, drawing others to Christ.
- Pastors shepherd. They care for, protect, and guide the people entrusted to them.
- Teachers ground the church in truth, so faith is built on understanding and not just feeling.
Why five, working as one
The point of Ephesians 4 is not five separate offices competing for attention. It is one body, joined and held together, with each gift supplying what the others lack. A church with only teachers may be well informed but unmoved. A church with only evangelists may grow quickly but lack roots. Together, the five build something that can stand.
How the Alliance is built on it
The Apostolic Alliance for Global Initiatives takes this passage as its founding scripture, and even its mark is drawn from it. The Fivefold Cross is a cross built from five squares, a center and four arms: the five gifts forming one body, and one body sent to the four corners of the earth.
